SOPA. How it could effect me.

As a blogger I have to admit SOPA and PIPA being passed does scare the hell out of me. Even though I live in England the powers of these bills will mean that "if" I were to make a post protesting about something or giving my point of view about something I run the risk of having my blog blocked or even stolen by the powers that be over the pond and lets face it, historically I have not been known for keeping quiet about subjects which have caught my attention.

There are times as a blogger I use pictures which are on the internet in my posts. I admit some of these pictures are not mine, usually I do link the site where I took the pictures from but there are times when I done (Im a bad blogger). I am NOT a pirate, I don't link to pirate sites but I have and no doubt will link to things which I am blogging about so that my readers can see for them selves what I am rambling on about and be able to form their own opinion. If SOPA and PIPA are passed I know that this will put me and many other bloggers in a situation where their blogs can and will be blocked.

For some people their blogs are their jobs. They are professional bloggers who make a living from creating posts for other people to read. I don't make any money from blogging, in fact if you take into account the fact that I use my own domain names and not the free sub-domains that my blog host offers it actually costs me money to blog, I pay for the privilege of doing this and have done for nearly 6 years now. I have not made a single penny from any of my blogs but, saying that I would be devastated if any of my blogs were to be taken down just because I had said something which the powers that be in America did not like and trust me if SOPA and PIPA are pushed through this will happen at some point.

The bill which was passed to try to stop internet piracy will be used to take away peoples freedom of speech. Think it wont happen? Let me take you back to the post I made before I blacked out my blog  a post which briefly talked about a student in Sheffield, England who America is trying to extradite using a treaty we stupidly signed so that terrorists and those suspected as terrorists can be extradited to America for trial. Thing is the guy that the powers that be are trying to extradite is NOT a terrorist or even a suspect. He hosted a website which linked to pirate websites. If we take this bending of rules to suit their own needs into account I am confident that other laws will be bent to suit the needs of those in power.

It is for these and many other reasons I am against the introduction of SOPA and PIPA. If you want to know more you can either Google "What is SOPA" or click here
